Sunday 4NCL Results

Today wasn't a good day for the NSDCA teams in round 10 of the 4NCL.

Cheddleton were beaten 4 - 2 by top of the table Manchester Manticores '1', but there was a great result for Alex Richardson on board 1, drawing with an IM graded over 2400, Jacob Boswell winning on board 3 against an opponent graded 2260 and Colin Davison drawing on board 5 against an opponent graded 2102.

Holmes Chapel were beaten 4.5 - 1.5 by Ashfield Breadsall '1', with John Turner drawing on board 2 and Chris Doran winning on board 3.

Friday Evening Results

Division 3

Cheddleton 'D'  2.5  Kidsgrove  1.5

Division 3 came to a conclusion last night, with Cheddleton 'D' tying with Cheddleton 'C' for the runners-up spot. A 3-1 win would have given them the runners-up spot on their own but 3 man Kidsgrove threw a spanner in the works.

Division 4

Cheddleton 'F'  0  Crewe 'C'  4

Crewe 'C' blew Cheddleton 'F's title chances out of the water last night with a 4-0 whitewashing. They can still draw level with Cheddleton 'E' on Match Points, if they win their last match, but cannot catch them on Game Points so Cheddleton 'E' are this season's Champions. Crewe 'C; now occupy the runners-up spot but can still be caught by both Cheddleton 'F' and Fenton 'B'.

Stafford retained the Open Cup, beating Cheddleton on board count.

Perry Trophy

Crewe  3  Cheddleton  1

Friday Evening Result

Division 3

Cheddleton 'D'  2  Alsager 'A'

Cheddleton 'D' lost their chance of winning the Division 3 title when they were held to a draw by Alsager 'A' last night. Despite an end of season stutter, in which they lost 2 of their last 3 matches, Newcastle 'D' have now been crowned Champions. Cheddleton 'D' can take the runners-up spot if they win their final match against bottom of the table Kidsgrove.

Chess Journal

Some months ago I publicised a new mobile app called ChessJournal, which enables you to record, store and analyze your games, plus much more, with all of your data stored in the cloud. I have recently been contacted by the authors of the app to say that it has just been updated with more features and is now available on both Android and Apple devices. Previously it was only available on Apple devices. You can click here for more information or just search for ChessJournal, in the Apple Store or Google Play Store, on your mobile phone or tablet.

Wednesday Evening Results

Division 3

Crewe 'B'  0.5  Fenton 'A'  3.5

Fenton finished their season with a bang but it was a case of too little too late as their win was not enough to lift them up the table and they finish 2nd from bottom, with Crewe just a point in front of them.

Newcastle 'D'  2.5  Alsager 'A'  1.5

Newcastle got back to winning ways in their last match of the season. They now lead the table but can still be caught if Cheddleton 'D' win their 2 matches in hand.

Internet Explorer

Ken McNulty has pointed out to me that the Fixtures & Results do not display properly when using Internet Explorer as your browser. I have no idea why this is at the moment, and I doubt that I'll spend much time looking into it as it is recommended that you do not use Internet Explorer. There are no problems when using Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera or Vivaldi browsers and, if you are running Windows 10, there are no problems with Microsoft Edge.

Monday Evening Results

Division 3

Fenton 'A'  1  Cheddleton 'C'  3

Cheddleton 'C' completed their fixtures last night with a win that took them to the top of the table. How long they will stay there though is anybody's guess as Newcastle 'D' are just a point behind but with 2 matches in hand. There is also a mathematical possibility that both Cheddleton 'D' and Alsager 'A' could catch them.

Division 5

Meir 'C'  2.5  Crewe 'D'  1.5

Meir 'C' have taken the Division 5 title by a point from Fenton 'C' following last night's win against Crewe 'D'.

Friday Evening Results

Division 2

Cheddleton 'B'  3.5  Newcastle 'C'  1.5

Cheddleton 'B' and Crewe 'A' are now level on Match Points at the top of Division 2, with Cheddleton slightly ahead on Game Points. The two teams will meet in their final match of the season on the 10th May in what will be the title decider, with Cheddleton needing only a draw and Crewe needing to win.

Division 5

Cheddleton 'I'  1  Crewe 'D'  3

Cheddleton 'I'  3  Newcastle 'F'  1

Cheddleton 'I' played 2 matches last night (Using 8 different players obviously !!), winning one and losing one. They are still bottom of the table, but with 3 matches left to play they still have plenty of opportunity to avoid the wooden spoon.

National Schools Championship Finals

St Edwards Academy (Leek) played in the National Schools Girls U11 Championship Finals at the weekend. David Rose has sent the following report :

"On Saturday and Sunday 1st/2nd April, Jasmine Jones, Tilly Snape and Lilly Brown played for St Edwards Academy in the National Schools Girls U11 Championship Finals at Bramley in Surrey.  After an early start and a four and a half hour journey on Saturday the girls played four games each, the last one starting at half past seven in the evening.  From the twelve games played on the Saturday, they won seven, drew one and lost four. At that point they were in 4th place.  After some hot chocolate, 'a bit' of sleep in the boarding house and a cooked breakfast they were ready for three more games on Sunday.  The first was against Nottingham who won the northern stage with ease - we won two and drew the other against them with magnificent play. The next round we won 2-1 and then we got beaten by the overall winners who only lost two of their 21 games.

The girls ended up in 4th place, with only private schools - who often have their own 'Grand Master' coaches - beating us.  Lilly needs a special mention for winning six of her seven games - an incredible achievement, demonstrating such high levels of concentration. The girls had a brilliant time and they deserve a lot of credit for the kindness and support they showed each other. They got home late Sunday night, knowing they had school the next morning."

Wednesday Evening Results

Division 2

Newcastle 'B'  1.5  Crewe 'A'  3.5

Crewe 'A' have gone top of Division 2 with one match remaining. Only Cheddleton 'B' can now catch them and they meet in the last match of the season in what could be the title decider.

Division 4

Crewe 'C'  2  Alsager 'B'  2

Alsager 'B' remain bottom of Division 4 following last night's draw.

Newcastle 'E'  1  Fenton 'B'  3

Fenton have moved into 3rd place in Division 4 with one match remaining.

Newcastle Congress

Martyn has now posted a report on the Newcastle Congress, along with photos, on the Newcastle website. Click here to view.

Monday Evening Results

Division 2

Macclesfield  3  Holmes Chapel Rooks  2

Macclesfield completed their Division 2 fixtures last night and, in the process, jumped to the top of the table. However, this looks unlikely to last as there are 3 teams just a point behind them but with matches in hand.

Division 3

Meir 'A'  3.5  Crewe 'B'  0.5

Meir are up to 3rd in the table with one match remaining.

Division 5

Fenton 'C'  3.5  Cheddleton 'G'  0.5

The top of Division 5 remains very tight. Last night's win took Fenton to the top of the table by a point from Meir 'C'. This completes Fenton's fixtures. A win from their last match against Crewe 'D' will give Meir 'C' the title. A draw would mean it would be shared as Fenton and Meir 'C' would be level on both Game Points and Match Points. However, Crewe 'D' will take the title on Game Points if they beat Meir 'C' and, also, win their other 2 remaining matches.

Nottingham Congress

Rob Shaw, Jacob Boswell and Rich Wiltshir were all competing in the Open Section of the Nottingham Congress this weekend. Julian Hawthorne and Roger Walker were playing in the Intermediate Section. Les Hall played in the Minor Section.

No results have been published online so I have no idea how any of them fared. If anybody has any idea then I would be grateful if you would let me know.

Newcastle Win National Club Championship

Many congratulations to Newcastle on winning the ECF Intermediate Club Championship this weekend. 3 wins and a draw from their 4 matches saw them take the  title by a margin of 2 points. The Newcastle team consisted of Alex Richardson (W3 D1 L0), Martyn Harris (W2 D0 L2), Alberto Gissi (W2 D1 L1) and Nic Wright (W2 D2 L0). Click here to view the final table.
